Honorary ambassador Anastasios Mitsialis has resigned from the position of commander of Mount Athos, according to a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The honorary head of GES and former Minister of National Defense general Alcibiades Stefanis takes over as the new commander.
The Political Commander of Mount Athos is the head of the Administration of the Autonomous Monastic State of Mount Athos and reports to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Greece. Its seat is Karyes. Its offices have been established in Thessaloniki and Ouranoupoli in Halkidiki.
The administration of Mount Athos is responsible for the administrative supervision of the exact observance of the sacred regimes and the safeguarding of public order and security.
According to article 29 of the Organization of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Administration of Mount Athos consists of the Governor of Mount Athos (who has the rank and salary of Coordinator of Decentralized Administration), the Deputy Governor and its other staff, permanent or under private law contract indefinite period.
