Alcaraz-Sinner duel expected in US Open semifinals

New York. World No. 1 Jannik Sinner, winner of this year’s Australian Open, could face No. 3 Carlos Alcaraz, the Roland Garros and Wimbledon champion, in the US Open semi-finals, according to Thursday’s draw for the year’s final Grand Slam tournament.

In the other semi-final, Novak Djokovic (2nd), Olympic champion in Paris and seeking the historic record of 25 Grand Slam titles, could face Alexander Zverev (4th), finalist in 2020, or Casper Ruud (8th), finalist in 2022.

Before his probable duel with Alcaraz, Sinner will face Daniil Medvedev (5th) in the quarter-finals, winner of the 2021 edition and runner-up in 2019 and 2023.

In the women’s draw, defending champion Coco Gauff (3rd) is likely to challenge Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka (2nd), whom she defeated in last year’s final, for a place in the final of the last Grand Slam of the year.

The American will make her debut in the New York tournament against the Frenchwoman of Russian origin Varvara Gracheva (66th), while Sabalenka will do so against a player from the qualifying phase.

The other semi-final could be played by the world number 1, the Polish Iga Swiatek, winner in 2022, with Elena Rybakina (4th) or Jasmine Paolini (5th), finalists this year at Roland Garros and Wimbledon.

Swiatek will begin her US Open campaign against a qualifier and will face Russian Mirra Andreeva (21st) for the first time in the third round, whom she defeated in three sets in the quarter-finals in Cincinnati last week.
