Alcaraz, Sinner and Djokovic advance to the quarterfinals in Shanghai

Shanghai. The two emerging tennis stars, the Spanish Carlos Alcaraz and the Italian Jannik Sinner, surpassed their commitments at the Shanghai Masters 1000 this Wednesday and are now just one obstacle away from meeting again in the semifinals of the Chinese tournament.

Alcaraz (number 2) made it to the quarterfinals after beating the French veteran Gaël Monfils (number 46) 6-4 and 7-5 in a match without major surprises, very effective in the rest, with a break in each sleeve, and after an hour and a half of play.

“The main thing in this match was to stay calm, control my emotions and wait for opportunities,” Alcaraz explained.

This year’s winner of Roland Garros and Wimbledon thus added his 12th consecutive victory and will seek his thirteenth against the Czech Tomas Machac (number 33), who surprised the American Tommy Paul (number 13) in three sets by 3-6, 6-4 and 6-3.

If he overcomes that obstacle, Alcaraz could face Sinner (number 1) again, whom he already defeated last week in the final in Beijing.

The Spaniard dominates 6-4 in their previous matches.

Revenge of number 1

The Italian defeated the American Ben Shelton (number 16) this Wednesday by 6-4 and 7-6 (7/1), taking revenge for the defeat suffered just a year ago in this same tournament, and will face the Russian in the quarterfinals. Daniil Medvedev (number 5), who eliminated the Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas (number 12) by 7-6 (7/3) and 6-3).

“It’s been very hard, when you play against him you don’t have much control… I just tried to stay mentally strong,” said Sinner, who this season won the Australian Open and the US Open, sharing the Grand Slams with Alcaraz.

Medvedev and Sinner have already met on 13 occasions, with a favorable balance for the Russian 7-6, although he has only been able to beat the Italian once in their last seven meetings (in the Wimbledon quarterfinals this same year).

Djokovic without giving up a set

The Serbian Novak Djokovic (number 4) also did not have too many problems in reaching the quarterfinals, defeating the Russian Roman Safiulin (number 61) in two sets 6-3 and 6-2 in just one hour and a quarter of the match.

The winner of 24 Grand Slams, who has not lost a set in three matches in Shanghai, will face the Czech Jakub Mensik (number 65) in the quarterfinals, who gave the surprise by defeating the Bulgarian Gregor Dimitrov (number 10), semifinalist of the year passed in this test.

For Djokovic, Shanghai is his first tournament since his surprising elimination in the third round of the US Open and in the Chinese city he is looking for what would be the 100th tournament of his career.

The Serbian’s horizon towards the final has also been cleared, since his main threat at the bottom of the draw, the German Alexander Zverev (number 3) was defeated in the last match of the day by the Belgian veteran David Goffin ( number 66).

In almost two hours of battle and after the German wasted a ball to extend the outcome of the match to a third set, Goffin won 6-4 and 7-5, thanks to his effectiveness in the offensive game, with only six volleys missed on the 35 occasions he went up to the net.

In the quarterfinals, Goffin will face the American Taylor Fritz (number 7).
