Album of the week: Cimafunk – “Pa’ Tu Cuerpa” – Album of the week – Music – Radio

May the funk be with you

Cimafunk is currently celebrated as one of the greatest show artists with his energetic concerts. “Pa’ Tu Cuerpa” preserves this electrifying live experience and is a tribute to the magical connection with his fans. The 35-year-old musician says: “The album title ‘For your body’ stands for the connection between me and my audience. From the moment I’m on stage, it no longer matters where we are or who we are. We are simply bodies that follow the rhythm of the music. That has always fascinated me, in this moment we are all the same, we are here because we need the music.” For Cimafunk, melody, rhythm and dance are basic physical needs like eating, drinking and breathing. The new album thus joins the series of its two predecessors “Terapía” – “therapy” – and “Alimento” – “food”.

Ode to femininity

At the same time, he gives the Spanish word cuerpo a feminine ending because, for Cimafunk, the origin of every body lies in femininity. He also celebrates female self-determination and empowerment in the lyrics of the songs on “Pa’ Tu Cuerpa”. For example, in his feature with the Colombian duo Monsieur Périné from Cali. The song “Catalina” celebrates the self-confident appearance of singer Catalina García. Cimafunk says: “When she walks into a room, you feel the electricity.” Or in the Pride anthem “Pretty”, a feature with New Orleans bounce icon Big Freedia, which is about discovering and celebrating the individual beauty in yourself and others. And of course, Cimafunk also adores the ladies in a romantic sense; for the first time, he also shares insights into his love life in his music on “Pa’ Tu Cuerpa”.

Subtle, positive messages

Cimafunk has already insisted on remaining apolitical on his last two albums. His stage name is a reference to his heritage as a “cimarrón”, i.e. a Cuban with African roots who successfully rebelled against slavery, takes his musical DNA out into the world and continually gives it refreshing updates with global influences. With tireless joie de vivre and natural charisma, he subtly makes statements for equality and thinking outside the box. Cimafunk broadens his own horizons while traveling. Two world tours and collaborations with stars from global pop have taken him to Asia, Australia and New Zealand since the pandemic. A large part of the songs on “Pa’ Tu Cuerpa” were written during this time, on these trips.
