Bautin began his top-level hockey in Dynamo Moscow, with whom he won two championship titles. He had his greatest success 30 years ago at the five-ring tournament in Albertville, where he didn’t score, but the Commonwealth of Independent States team led by coach Tikhonov took the gold.
A few months later, he was selected by Winnipeg in the first round of the NHL draft, in the world’s most popular hockey league, played for Detroit as well as the Jets. In total, he had 30 Canadian runs in 132 games.

After returning to Europe, he worked in Sweden, Germany and Japan, finishing his career in 2004 after working on Magnitogorsk and Wings of the Samara Soviets. Bautin represented Russia in three world championships (1992, 1997 and 1999).
