On the field, many goals; outside of him, a reserved appearance which differed from the other stars passing through the “Land of the Boot”.

“I follow the debates carefully. I have my own ideas about everything and I discuss them with my wife,” the former center forward said in an interview with journalist Gabriella Greison, on Public.

Gilardino’s stance also runs counter to other players, who avoid speaking publicly about topics such as bias. Openly, the former attacker already positions himself as an activist in the fight against homophobia.

“The time has come to end the taboo [de homossexuais no futebol]. Coming out should be a normal thing: no clamor, no headlines, everything is normal, you know what I mean? But in the locker room, we don’t talk about these things… and the issue isn’t even that obvious. There must be more freedom, even if it is in football,” he said in an interview with Public.

Childhood dream of playing for Juventus never came true

Born in the province of Biella, in the Piedmont region, Gilardino is an avowed Juventus fan. However, with stints in important teams like Milan, Parma e Florentinesthe former top scorer never had the opportunity to wear the jersey of his favorite team.

“I slept in a Juve jersey. I remember my father, Gianfranco, taking me to Delle Alpi for the first time [antigo estádio da Juventus] to watch the UEFA Cup final against borussia dortmund. The team had [Roberto] Baggio et [Gianluca] Vialli. I really liked Vialli because he was a very good striker. They say I look like Pippo Inzaghi, but I don’t know if that’s true,” he once said in an interview with Gazzetta du Sport.

Ironic or not, Gilardino was Inzaghi’s teammate at Milan, when the two were competing for a position in the team managed by Carlo Ancelotti. Together (not necessarily on the field), they were champions of the Champions League in the 2006/07 season, the club’s last European title, a campaign which made Kaká the best player in the world.

With two world cups contested, Gilardino invested in his coaching career after hanging up his boots. In 2022-23, he arrived at Genoa, the club where he was a player, and helped the team return to the Italian first division.

In the current season there are four victories, three draw and eight defeats in 15 Serie A Games. Genoa occupies the 15ª post with 15 points won and will try to react against his coach’s childhood team.
