“Albert Heijn and Unions Restart Talks for New Collective Labor Agreement After Strikes Cause Empty Shelves”

Albert Heijn and trade unions CNV and FNV will soon meet again about a new collective labor agreement for employees of distribution centers. The strikes that started last week caused many empty shelves in the supermarket.

The new round of talks starts at the initiative of AH. That is sufficient reason for CNV and FNV to temporarily suspend the strikes. Talks are expected to start on Monday.

AH is prepared to pay a 10 percent wage increase and to remove the proposed deteriorations from the table, the supermarket chain wrote in the invitation on Wednesday evening.

“That is sufficient reason for us to call on people to go back to work on Thursday morning,” said CNV director Roel van Riezen. “I expect that we will soon be out as far as the other points are concerned.”

By this he refers, for example, to the allowance for working on Sundays or an arrangement for early termination of employment. There are also improvements for the temporary workers: their roster will be made two weeks in advance.

AH is pleased that the unions have temporarily suspended their actions. “We are now working with all colleagues to restock our stores properly. This way all our customers can shop with us again as they are used to.”
