Albert Heijn and trade unions CNV and FNV will soon meet again about a new collective labor agreement for employees of distribution centers. The strikes that started last week and lasted eleven days caused many empty shelves in the supermarket.
The new round of talks starts at the initiative of Albert Heijn. CNV and FNV see sufficient leads to temporarily suspend the strikes. Talks are expected to start Monday.
Albert Heijn is willing to raise wages by 10 percent. The supermarket chain is also prepared to scrap proposed deteriorations in working conditions, she wrote in the invitation to the unions on Wednesday evening.
“That is sufficient reason for us to call on people to go back to work on Thursday morning,” said CNV director Roel van Riezen. “I expect that, as far as the other points are concerned, we will soon be out.”
By this he refers, for example, to the allowance for working on Sundays and an arrangement for early termination of employment. There are also improvements for the temporary workers: their roster will be made two weeks in advance. According to FNV, about fifteen hundred employees spread over five distribution centers participated in the strikes.
Trade unions must first present any agreement to members
Albert Heijn is happy that the unions have temporarily suspended their actions. “We are now working with all colleagues to restock our stores properly. This way all our customers can shop with us again as they are used to.”
FNV, CNV and Albert Heijn now hope to reach a new agreement, after which the unions will present the agreement to the members. Only if they agree will new strikes be definitively over.
