Albert Čuba, actor, comedian and principal of Ostrava’s Mír Theater, was a guest of the Morning Club. With Miloš Pokorný, they discussed the interesting circumstances of the establishment of the theater, their sense of humor, but also the successes of the improvisational troupe Three Tigers, which, in addition to him, consists of Štěpán Kozub, Robin Ferro and Vladimír Polák.
The audience goes to the actors
When Divadlo Mír started, you donated part of the family property. What makes a person give family money or mortgage a house to something so uncertain?
It was quite difficult, but faith made me do it, because in such a situation and at such a moment, a person probably has nothing left but faith in his own idea. So the belief that it would work out was the only thing my wife and I had in our hands at the time. She signed the loan agreement.
You focused the theater on comedy.
Yes, to the repertoire, which at that time was a bit of a minority in Ostrava. And it worked.
And what did you bet on the most?
I bet on boys. The audience goes to the actors, they always have. No one goes to the directors. Few people know the titles and authors.
The Three Tigers became a phenomenon. Weren’t you afraid that after the initial boom everything would melt away again?
I don’t know, I was mainly clear that I had to keep the actors. We have a completely different practice in remunerating actors than is common in state theatres. I’ll tell you an example. A younger colleague from Ostrava is currently moving to Prague, to one of the most prestigious Czech theaters. But with his salary he cannot afford to live in Prague. He would pay an extra three thousand for the rent. That’s the reality. At the Mír Theater, however, we reward the actors fairly.
Are you telling me you’re giving out apartments?
No, but an averagely paid actor at the Mír Theater could afford an apartment in Prague if the Mír Theater was in Prague. But it is in Ostrava, where the rents are a little different.

A film that disappointed
What do you consider the biggest success of your party?
What made us the most visible. It’s probably the Three Tigers. These are our sketches that we started doing. The fact that the Peace Theater still exists and is still sold out is also a success.
And what do you regret the most?
I guess the movie Three Tigers in the Movie: Jackpot was not as successful in cinemas as I expected.
What is it in? After all, you were everywhere at that time.
We probably filmed something completely different from what the audience and our fans expected. Perhaps we also made a mistake in choosing the title Three Tigers in the movie.
Are you planning a repair?
Everything is moving towards us starting to shoot another film during the holidays. We will direct it with Štěpán Kozub.

Sometimes we knew something was wrong
Were you surprised that Štěpán Kozub sold out the O2 Arena?
It wasn’t surprising. He was really at the top at that time. He had a string of stand-up shows in smaller venues that sold out immediately. And people’s response to it was absolutely incredible.
Have you ever been in a situation with the Tigers where you thought: Today was a bummer?
Yes, sometime during the improvisation itself we knew that something was wrong, that we had to end it very quickly. It wasn’t funny, it was stupid.
What kind of humor do you personally like?
Any. Mostly visual humor. Visual gags. I grew up on Tom and Jerry and Mr. Bean. But I also like intelligent vice-type humor.
What were the beginnings of the Mír Theater in Ostrava and how difficult is it to create a theater in this city to make it successful? And how does Albert remember the first production?
You will learn this in the player at the beginning of the article and also in the video. You can find the archive of all Morning Club interviews in the Podcasts section, in the Expres FM application and in your favorite podcast service. Video archive of Expres FM radio search on Stream.cz!
