Albert Cartier on pole to train Le Mans FC

Since he has lost his job at Gazélec Ajaccio, in November 2018, Albert Cartier did not touch up a sideline. Fifteen months later, and after several failed returns, it is therefore at Le Mans FC that he could return to business for a commando mission: to keep the club in Ligue 2 twelve days from the end of the championship. According to the specialized site maligue2.fr, the technician met the president of Le Mans FC on Tuesday, Thierry Gomez, still looking for a successor to Richard Déziré. And if other coaches have been consulted, the ex-Messin would hold the rope.

Born in Vesoul in 1960, Albert Cartier was first a solid center-back for 15 years. From 1980 to 1995, he spent seven seasons at Nancy, including three under the leadership of a certain … Arsène Wenger. Then eight seasons at Metz, his heart club, with which he won a Coupe de France in 1988, and where he ended his career after 444 professional matches. In the process, it was in Metz that he began his coaching career, with the reserve team, then the first team, before being dismissed after a year.

Two climbs in a row with Metz

Then went to Geugnon, then abroad for seven years, mainly in the Belgian first division, he found the bench messin in 2012, when the club has just gone down to the National. Two seasons and two climbs later, he returned to Ligue 1. But left the club the following year on a relegation to Ligue 2. He then joined Sochaux and then GFC Ajaccio. Three seasons where he plays the maintenance until his dismissal by the Corsican club in October 2018.

Reputed to be rigorous and strict, Albert Cartier considers above all the role of coach as that of a manager, able to manage a staff, who must know how to delegate and listen. But also to decide. 4-4-2 follower and a vertical play (rather than passing the ball around with side passes), he enjoys offensive German football but equally admires the Italian technicians and their tactical sense.

Nominated by his peers best L2 coach in 2014, Albert Cartier had wanted for several months to find a bench. Last October, he signed in favor of Etoile du Sahel in Tunisia, but the case had collapsed. In December, he had met the president of Seraing, the satellite club of FC Metz, in the Belgian third division, without this succeeding. The third attempt, to find a Ligue 2 that he knows well, may be the right one.
