He drew fashion at the age of 7
Born in Morocco to a Moroccan Jewish family, Elbaz was raised in Israel. He had started designing clothes at the age of 7, aware of his talent, his mother had encouraged him to move to New York where he had arrived in the mid-1980s. After a stint at a wedding dress company, he was hired as an assistant to Geoffrey Beene, where he stayed for 7 years. From 1996 to 1998, Elbaz had worked for the Guy Laroche fashion house.
