Smart fashion that has a heart

A sudden disappearance, that of Elbaz that left everyone in shock. I have lost not only a colleague, but a close friend, said Richemont founder and president Johann Rupert, recalling that Alber had a well-deserved reputation as one of the brightest and most beloved figures in fashion. I have always been struck by his intelligence, sensitivity, generosity and unbridled creativity – added Rupert -. He was a man of exceptional warmth and talent, and his singular vision, sense of beauty and empathy leave an indelible mark. It was a great privilege to see Alber in his latest endeavor as he worked to fulfill his dream of smart fashion that he cherishes. A definition that summarizes the character of the man who has always put his explosive creativity at the service of women, to make them feel beautiful and at ease, blending the craftsmanship of the great haute couture tailoring with new technologies.

He drew fashion at the age of 7

Born in Morocco to a Moroccan Jewish family, Elbaz was raised in Israel. He had started designing clothes at the age of 7, aware of his talent, his mother had encouraged him to move to New York where he had arrived in the mid-1980s. After a stint at a wedding dress company, he was hired as an assistant to Geoffrey Beene, where he stayed for 7 years. From 1996 to 1998, Elbaz had worked for the Guy Laroche fashion house. In 1998 the realization of a dream: to succeed Yves Saint Laurent at the helm of the Rive Gauche pret – porter, until the exemption, when the Gucci group acquires the brand, enlisting Tom Ford.

Italian fashion also owes creativity to Alber Elbaz: the designer had collaborated for a year with Krizia in Milan. Then the return to Paris and the landing, after a stop, in Lanvin, a small company that manages to bring the big brands back into the firmament.

Fear of Covid: I feel the enemy will attack me

He had chosen Paris as the place to live Elbaz. The Covid-19 pandemic had troubled him, as he confessed in a recent interview via Zoom to the magazine Number. I’m a real hypochondriac – he explained -, so I always prefer to be in a big city, near a hospital, just in case … Especially now!

Elbaz was worried: Whenever there is a delivery, I feel the enemy will attack me. a surreal moment, every knock on the door creates fear in me. And this goes against my philosophy of life, don’t open the door to others. I must say that we are going through a bizarre time. These are very strange times and long sad days for me and for all of us. But then Elbaz looked ahead with his usual humanity: I believe our brains are trained to deal with post trauma. I want to believe that it will be possible to return to a little modesty, humility and simplicity. We were having crazy marathons. Perhaps this is the time to reflect. Time and beauty are my definitions of luxury.
