Panathinaikos started the defense of the European trophy with a victory at an idle pace: 87-77 against Alba Berlin, in the same stadium where five months ago they were crowned European champions. The score at halftime was 45-36 in favor of the “greens”.
The “clover” quickly reached double-digit differences (7-19, 20-30, 32-42) and had control of the match without charging. The Germans counterattacked after the break and got within shooting distance (54-56), but Brown, Hernangometh and Kendrick Nan brought Panathinaikos back to within a safe distance: 57-71 with a 0-9 run at the start of the fourth period. Alba cut to 75-79, but Kostas Slukas gave them the free throw with a three-pointer.
Lorenzo Brown scored 5 points on his debut with the “greens”, while Cedi Osman had another 5. The pair were left out of the Super Cup matches in Rhodes. Kendrick Nunn was the top scorer with 16 points and Matias Lessor added 14. Ergin Ataman also used Sluka 10, Grant 10, Kalaitzakis, Grigonis 3, Hernangomet 11, Mitoglou 5, Yurtseven 8 tonight. The injured K. Antetokounmpo was absent, while Papapetrou was not used.
Panathinaikos had been defeated in the previous three Euroleague premieres (2021-3). About 1000 Greeks were also in the stands of the Uber Arena.

Olympiacos will face the strengthened Fenerbahce in Istanbul, in its own premiere. The match will be played on Friday night at 20.30. The “red and white” traveled to Turkey without the injured Milutinov and Fal.
