A rare specimen of white orca has been spotted off the coast of Alaska near the Kuiu Islands. Stéphanie Hayes, the marine biologist behind the video, who was aboard the Northern Song (Alaska Sea Adventures guided excursions), explained that the whitish coloration on the orca’s coat is due to leucism, a genetic condition that results in a partial loss of pigmentation. According to statements by Alaska Sea Adventures, not even the captain of the ship, which has sailed those waters for 45 years, had never seen a specimen of white orca and it would in fact be the first sighting in Alaska.
