Depression
Emerson is in custody in Portland on suspicion of 83 attempted murders. That is the number of passengers and crew members who were on board the aircraft. The Alaska Airlines pilot flew as a passenger in the cockpit after a weekend with friends to commemorate the death of his best friend in 2018. Emerson told the newspaper that he had also been struggling with depression for a long time before that loss.
In the interview, Emerson says that pilots with mental problems are largely alone. Due to strict regulations, it is virtually impossible to continue flying with psychological complaints or antidepressants. “A lot of us aren’t as candid as we should be,” the pilot said.
His wife told the newspaper that she urged Emerson to seek help. He didn’t want to do this, for fear of no longer being able to fly.
Handcuffs
The pilot talks to the newspaper to be “as transparent as possible” about what happened after he took psychedelic mushrooms. He didn’t want to hurt anyone and says he is innocent. He simply couldn’t wake up from his ‘dream’, he says. In the cockpit he saw no other solution.
After the pilots overpowered him there, he tried to open an emergency door. “You have to put handcuffs on me or it will end badly,” he told a flight attendant.
Once in custody at Portland airport, Emerson was still not in his right mind. “In his cell, he undressed, tried to jump out of a window, urinated on himself and tried to pleasure himself – all in the hope of waking up,” the paper said. It wasn’t until five days after eating the mushrooms that things became clearer.
In the interview he expresses regret. “The crew was faced with a situation for which there is no manual, checklist or procedure.”
