The plane – a Boeing 737 Max 9 – took off from Portland towards Ontario in California a little before 5pm local time.

About half an hour later it was back and made an emergency landing.

The airport’s spokesperson Allison Ferre confirms that the plane landed safely, writes NBC.

The channel has published a photo posted by passenger Kyle Rinker on X.

– When the wall of the plane just breaks off in the middle of the flight, he writes.

To CNN says Rinker that one of the plane’s windows popped out shortly after the plane took off.

– It happened very quickly. We got a little higher, and the window/wall just popped out and I didn’t notice it until the oxygen masks came down, he says to the channel.

The channel KPTV has also posted pictures submitted by a passenger. They also show a row of seats with a large hole in the fuselage. In a photo taken from the outside, it appears that the entire emergency exit hatch is missing.

According to Alaska Airlines, no injuries have been reported to any of the 174 passengers or 6 employees on board the plane.

The airline describes what happened as an “incident”.

– The safety of our guests and employees is always our first priority, so even though this type of incident is rare, the cabin crew had training in how to handle the situation, the company says in a statement to NBC.

According to the FAA’s online published lists, the plane was completed and approved just two months ago.

Aircraft manufacturer Boeing says it is aware of the incident.

– We are working to get more information and are in contact with our airline customer. A technical team from Boeing is ready to assist in the investigation, says a spokesperson for the company.
