The head of the Spanish Federation for Alzheimer’s and Other Dementias, Marilu Almagro, warned that the number of people with Alzheimer’s disease in Spain could triple by 2050 to reach 3.6 million people affected by this disease, according to the Infobay news site.

According to the website, the president of the federation issued this warning during a reception for participants in the Tenth National Conference on Alzheimer’s Disease, which was opened by Queen Sofia, expressing his regret at the absence of an official census of Alzheimer’s patients in Spain.

Almagro called for “implementing a type of tool that allows obtaining a fully updated number of cases occurring in Spain to know the evolution of the disease,” explaining that “Spain records between 100,000 and 200,000 diagnoses every year.”

“Infobay” pointed out “the possibility of obtaining two drugs within two or three years, as they will be the first drug that will allow attacking the disease and not the symptoms to slow it down.”
