Alarming Increase in Environmental Activist Murders: Colombia Tops the List with 60

Colombia tops the list with 60 murders, according to data released by the NGO Global Witness.

At least 177 people were killed last year by organized criminal gangs and land grabbers in the name of environmental protection. According to the latest count, five deaths have been reported in the Amazon rainforest

At least 1,910 environmentalists have been killed between 2012 and 2022. Statistics also show that the accused in most of the murders go unpunished. Brazil, Mexico, Honduras and the Philippines are the countries with the highest number of environmental protection deaths in 2022, after Colombia. Latin American countries accounted for 88% of fatal attacks, including the murders of Brazilian activist Bruno Pereira and journalist Dom Phillips in July.

The court rejected the petition filed by N. Chandrababu Naidu seeking to transfer him to house arrest

The report also points out that while the 2022 figures are down from the 200 murders recorded in 2021, the death rate is still high. The report points to the fight for resources in Latin America, Asia and Africa, including rare minerals used to make electric cars and wind turbines. Global Witness has produced this report annually for the past 11 years.
