American doctors are sounding the alarm among young people, well below the age of 50, because the number of cancer cases in this population category has increased recently. Experts from the American Cancer Society recommend frequent medical tests for early detection of all types of cancer, which can improve the chances of survival.

Dr. Bruce Salzburg, a gastroenterologist in Atlanta, United Statesfound that “we detected colon cancer in patients much younger than 50 years old”, and this phenomenon is increasing among young people, according to CBS News.

Medical experts do not know the exact cause of this alarming increase in the number of cancer patients among young people, but several main factors that produce the condition are known.

“There are 4 main causes: obesity, smoking, alcohol and lack of physical activity, these are obviously the kinds of things we’re trying to eliminate,” Dr Salzburg said.

While some patients may not see any symptoms, doctors say there are some warning signs to look out for. “Number one is rectal bleeding. Many patients think it’s hemorrhoids,” said Dr. Salzburg.

This must be diagnosed by a doctor. People are advised to watch for other symptoms such as abdominal pain, unexplained weight loss and changes in bowel habits.

“That’s the one thing I always tell my patients, a lot of patients are afraid of a colonoscopy, but I tell them not to be. It really is a simple procedure,” said Dr. Salzburg.

“And the truth is that cancer is preventable if we could do a colonoscopy and let’s say we find a polyp, we remove that polyp, well, that polyp can’t eventually turn into cancer.”

The American Cancer Society says that early detection for all types of cancer can significantly improve the chances of survival.

Doctors also recommend that screenings begin at age 45 for people at average risk. People should have regular medical checkups and lead an active lifestyle with daily physical activity and a healthy diet.
