Alarming Decrease of Mexican Coaches in Liga MX: Only Four to Lead Teams in Clausura 2024

Mexican soccer faces an alarming decrease in the presence of local coaches in Liga MX. The next Clausura 2024, scheduled to begin on January 12, will only have the direction of four Mexican strategists, revealing a constant and worrying trend in recent tournaments.

Miguel the ‘Piojo’ Herrera has been one of the few to remain active since Clausura 2022, with a brief interruption in Clausura 2023, something that none of his Mexican colleagues has managed to sustain.

In one count, the Clausura 2022 featured four Mexican coaches on the benches: Miguel Herrera (Tigres), Ignacio Ambriz (Toluca), Javier Aguirre (Monterrey) and Michel Leaño (Chivas). Currently, only Herrera continues in Liga MX, while Aguirre returned to direct in Spain and Ambriz was unable to complete the previous tournament.

A slight rebound was seen in the Apertura 2022 and Clausura 2023, where up to seven local coaches were in charge in the Liga MX, however, this trend could not be maintained.

During Apertura 2022, Herrera still in Tigres, Víctor Manuel Vucetich in Monterrey, Ricardo Cadena in Chivas, Jaime Lozano in Necaxa, Eduardo Fentanes in Santos and Nacho Ambriz with the Diablos Rojos were part of this figure.

In Clausura 2023, the quota increased to seven with the inclusion of Benjamín Mora (Atlas), Raúl Gutiérrez (Cruz Azul), Eduardo Arce (Puebla) and Rafa Puente Jr (Pumas). However, Siboldi, of Uruguayan origin, emerged as Clausura 2023 champion, which resulted in once again a loss of confidence in Mexican coaches.

The Apertura 2023 saw a decrease, with only five local technicians: Miguel Herrera (Tijuana), Ignacio Ambriz (Toluca), Benjamín Mora (Atlas), Eduardo Arce (Puebla) and Diego Mejía (Juárez).

Finally, for Clausura 2024, the number has been reduced, showing only four Mexicans. Miguel Herrera with Xolos, Eduardo Fentanes with Necaxa, Ricardo Carbajal with Puebla and Diego Mejía with Juárez will be responsible for trying to reverse this trend and regain trust in national coaches in the Mexican soccer field.
