Alan Wake 2: Exclusive Hands-On Preview of the Radical Survival Horror Sequel

Throughout September, IGN magazine brings exclusive content dedicated to the survival horror Alan Wake. A few days ago it was an 11-minute preview of new gameplay footage, now it’s the first hands-on preview. Matt Purslow went straight to Remedy’s offices in Finland to try out the game. Specifically, it was Saga Anderson’s third mission called “Local Girl” (from which the previously mentioned 11-minute gameplay comes), while it lasts approximately an hour.

According to Purslow, the start was quite slow, but it had a strong atmosphere. Saga has arrived in Watery, the neighboring town of Bright Falls, where everyone knows her for some reason, even though she doesn’t remember ever being there. He can talk to different characters and find clues. The part behind Saga is supposed to be a detective story for the most part, so even in her “thought place” we’ll be taking notes on characters and places and connecting the clues together. Purslow says that the UI and controls for this part are quite cluttered and confusing, but Remedy is said to have taken his feedback to heart and will try to improve it for release.

At the same time, it is supposed to be a real survival horror, where there are few bullets and only a few fights with enemies, but the opponents are really strong. The location is said to be open, so we can freely move to places where the main task does not lead us, there should also be enough backtracking, as is customary in the genre. There are also puzzles typical for survival horror.

In short, as we already know from the footage so far and as Purslow himself points out at the end of the preview, the sequel to Alan Wake does a lot of things differently than the first part. The editor of IGN even refers to the game as one of the most radically different sequels in gaming history. At the same time, however, he adds that practically all changes are for the better.

Alan Wake 2 releases on October 27th for PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
