Between filming about 90 films in which he participated, Alain Delon, whose fortune is estimated at 200 million dollars, acquired magnificent collections of art, weapons, bottles of alcohol and watches.
“Some people buy cars, but I prefer pictures,” said the French cinema icon when he auctioned some of his masterpieces 17 years ago. And he admits that painting is his god, and his passion is the 19th century French artist Jean-Francois Millet.
Other famous admirers of the master from Normandy are the Dutchman Vincent van Gogh and the eccentric Salvador Dali.
The iconic blue-eyed actor began collecting art in the early 1970s, when he had already achieved fame. At one point near the end of his career he decided to sell everything because he could not stand posthumous auctions. He wanted to leave his children money.
So last year he received more than 8 million euros from more than 80 pictures.
The most expensive of them is by Raoul Dufy – “Bay of Saint-Address” from 1906,
for which the new owner paid more than 1 million euros. Even Eugene Delacroix’s canvas “Arabian horse tied to a stake” costs less – 775,100 euros.
Two paintings by Delon’s favorite, Jean-François Millet, also entered the auction. The brochure also mentioned a sculpture – a crouching lion, a lion and a panther – by one of Alain Delon’s favorite sculptors, Rembrandt Bugatti.
The actor bought his work many times. But he does not hesitate to part with them. For example, when he married Rosalie van Bremen, he sold almost all the treasures from the artist.
Some of them are advertised by the advisers as very valuable and loved by the French Casanova, because they are “sculpted” by the touch of his hand.
In 1969, he bought “Hornet Beetle” by Albrecht Dürer
the highest price ever paid by an old school master.
This is what the trade consultant Benjamin Perrone said in the brochure for the catalog last year. The French cinema idol also owned “The Knight, Death and the Devil” by the same artist. His children thought it was his because the painter had the same initials as their father.
Alain Delon also received paintings that were thought to be the work of Rembrandt and Rubens at the time, but later turned out to be excellent copies of their students. For example, it is believed that “Christ on the Cross” came from the brush of Rubens and was bought by the famous French artist in 1976. But research in recent years is debating its origin. This, according to Peter Shatborn, the honorary director of the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, does not reduce the value of the canvases.
In the last 17 years, Delon parted not only with his paintings, but also with his watches, weapons and wine. For all these transactions, he chooses one intermediary – Pierre Cornet de Saint-Cyr. And although canvas is valuable to their authors,
Vintage firearms sold in 2014 have a personal stamp.
Among them is a Winchester Model 1892 .30 caliber rifle given to him by Steve McQueen. With him, he shot in the famous American series of the 80s “Dead or Alive Wanted”. His first price was between 2,000 and 3,000 euros, but the final price was 19,000. In addition, the actor parted with a Colt Frontier 1873 pistol, which he used in the 1971 western “Red Sun”. In the final, it was worth 8,600 euros.
The most valuable weapon at the auction 10 years ago was a 0.465 caliber rifle with a rare double barrel, valued at 40,000 euros. Other items up for sale include Delon’s costume as Captain Paul Metran in Concorde Airport `79, as well as a felt hat with a steel buckle worn in Casanova Returns.
Although he vowed during his lifetime that no one would see a posthumous sale of his treasures, in February this year it was revealed that Alain Delon had stored 72 guns in his home. It is not yet clear whether it would be put up for auction. It was only known that there was no permission for them.
Two years before he parted ways with his signature items, Alain Delon offered around 100 watches for sale in Hong Kong. It aimed to attract Asian customers. It is the most unique item by Cartier with actors’ initials engraved on the back and 18-karat gold. The strap is white, made of crocodile leather. He wore it in the summer because it was different from the tan. In the end, its new owner got it for 55,000 euros.
The second Cartier sold also had Alain Delon’s personal print. He starred in the movie “The Policeman”. It is a classic model, more accurate.
The list includes several other types of the same brand in white and yellow gold, as well as Piaget in white gold. Several other Breitling chronometers are available in the brochure, one of which is inspired by the first model in the 1940s. There are also watches from the popular brand “Rolex”.
One of the most important is the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Jumbo, which Alain
Delon wears on her wrist in the 1976 film Like a Boomerang,
in “The word of a cop” in 1985 and in “You won’t be a cop who sleeps” in 1988. The final price of the jewel came to almost 70 thousand euros. The buyer is Asian.
In the Far East, the French film Casanova is very popular. This is also clear from the fact that a Chinese collector bought a large part of the 1,000 bottles of wine from Delon’s stock. Their total price is 250,000 euros. Dong Guo is a media mogul from the city of Shenzhen. With thick glasses, he sat in the first row and always raised his fingers as a sign that he was ready to give a higher price, Reuters reports.
Today, after the death of the icon of French cinema, it seems that his things will sell for even more, despite his willingness to sell his collections and objects after his death.
