Alain Cocq, who had decided to let himself die, agrees to feed himself

Suffering from an incurable disease, Alain Cocq was hospitalized Monday evening, after 4 days without treatment or food. He challenged his refusal of treatment in the face of his worsening condition.

Alain Cocq, suffering from an incurable disease and who wanted to let himself die before being hospitalized on Monday evening, is rehydrated and replenished “with his agreement”, he said Wednesday, September 9. He announced that he could go home “within seven to ten days”.

“I was no longer able to lead this fight”, confided the fifty-year-old, admitted to the Dijon University Hospital (Côte-d’Or) to receive palliative care there after having challenged Monday evening his refusal of care while his condition worsened.

Alain Cocq, suffering from an incurable disease, had announced, on the night of Friday September 4 to Saturday September 5 on Facebook, to interrupt treatment, diet and hydration, thus letting himself die live in order to denounce “agony” constrained by the current law on end of life. Social network however announced on Saturday morning that it had blocked this video broadcast. Alain Cocq had, shortly before, suffered a refusal from President Emmanuel Macron to help him die by authorizing assisted suicide “on a compassionate basis”.

Alain “regains the hair of the animal; the fight continues but in a different way”, Sophie Medjeberg, lawyer and void-president of the Handi-Mais-Pas-Que association, told AFP on Wednesday, expressing concern that “his fundamental rights have been respected”.
