Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic, reacting to the abolition of Serbian state structures in northern Kosovo imposed by the government in Pristina, presented Belgrade’s main demands “to make substantial progress in the dialogue” held under the auspices of the European Union. Vucic called for local elections in northern Kosovo, the return of Serbs to the police and judiciary, the withdrawal of Kosovo’s special police forces from the north, and the establishment of the Union of Serbian Municipalities (ZSO).
Vucic also announced the adoption of a resolution by the Serbian parliament that would declare “illegal” all Kosovo state structures established after independence in 2008.
He also said that within 45 days, a bill would be passed to designate Kosovo as a “special social protection area”, with the aim of ensuring financial support for Serbs left unemployed after the closure of the structures.
The new crisis on the Belgrade-Pristina line was manifested when the Kosovo authorities closed all the parallel Serbian structures in the north in the last two weeks, considering their operation unconstitutional and illegal.
Belgrade described as “criminal” the behavior of the government of Kosovo, denouncing an attempt to “persecute the Serbian population”.
The European Union, as well as the USA, France, Great Britain and Germany, criticized Kosovo, characterizing “unilateral and uncoordinated actions in the north of the country”.
