At the recent 2024 Oscars, Al Pacino came into the spotlight after uncharacteristically announcing Best Picture winner Oppenheimer without mentioning the other nominees.
The renowned actor, Academy Award winner and nine-time nominee, has now explained the reason behind his choice of words in a statement.
According to Al Pacino: “There seems to be some controversy over the fact that he didn’t mention each film by name last night before announcing the best picture award.”

“I just want to make it clear that it was not my intention to omit them, but rather a choice by the producers so that they were not mentioned again since they were highlighted individually throughout the ceremony. “I was honored to be a part of the evening and chose to follow the way they wanted this award to be presented.”
Anticlimactic revelation
During his performance on stage, Al Pacino was greeted with a standing ovation as the theme from The Godfather played.
After thanking the audience, the actor mentioned the possibility of reciting some Shakespeare, but quickly dismissed the idea. Then, he made the long-awaited winner reveal:
”Ten wonderful films were nominated, but only one will win the award for best film. And I have to go to the envelope for that, and I will. Here it comes. And my eyes see Oppenheimer.”
Although the audience and viewers took a moment to process the information, they eventually broke out into applause and cheers. However, Pacino acknowledged that he understands how some might have felt snubbed by not mentioning the other nominees.
He expressed empathy toward filmmakers, actors and producers who might have been offended and hurt by this omission.
The incident with Al Pacino at the Oscars has recalled past episodes of errors in the delivery of the Best Picture award, such as the famous case of La La Land and Moonlight.
Although it did not reach the level of confusion of that incident, Pacino has been the focus of attention due to this way of announcing the winner.
