Jerusalem (CNN) Qatari satellite television station Al Jazeera’s cameraman Samer Abu Dhaka was seriously injured in an Israeli Defense Force (IDF) attack while reporting in Khan Yunis, southern Gaza Strip, and left for five hours. announced that he had died.

The agency’s Gaza bureau chief, Wael Dahadou, was also injured at the same scene, but was taken to a hospital and survived.

Dahadou lost his wife, daughter, son and grandson in an attack on a refugee camp in the central Gaza Strip in late October.

In the early hours of the 15th, schools and houses were shelled in Khan Yunis, leaving at least 17 people dead and dozens injured. Abu Dhaka and his colleagues were reporting on a civil defense team’s rescue efforts at a school at the scene when they were attacked. There is also information that it was a drone attack. Three members of Gaza’s civil defense team were also killed, the Interior Ministry said.

Abu Dhaka’s body was buried in Khan Yunis on the 16th, and hundreds of residents gathered to mourn.

Al Jazeera said in a statement that Israel was systematically targeting and killing its journalists and their families. He called on the international community to immediately hold the Israeli government and IDF accountable.

However, an IDF spokesperson told CNN that the IDF has never intentionally attacked journalists and said it would never occur. At the same time, he emphasized the dangers of remaining in a combat zone.

The IDF later said in a new statement that it had given permission for Abu Dhaka to take a safe route after his injuries were discovered and an ambulance had been called.

However, the ambulance took a different route and encountered road damage. The IDF immediately sent in bulldozers to help with the recovery effort, but claims it was too late by the time the work was completed.
