His Excellency Dr. Sultan bin Ahmed Al Jaber, Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology, President-designate of the Conference of the Parties COP28, confirmed that thanks to the forward-looking vision of the leadership and its directives to invest in the future of renewable energy, the UAE began building a diversified mix of energy sources that includes wind energy and solar energy, and built the three largest Solar power plants in one location and the lowest cost in the world. His Excellency explained the world’s need to triple its production capacity from renewable energy sources over the next seven years, and six times by 2040, to reach 50,000 TWh.
This came in His Excellency’s keynote speech before the “Berlin Dialogue Conference on Transition in the Energy Sector”, which is currently being held in the Federal Republic of Germany, where he called on the international community to agree on the goal of achieving a logical, practical and gradual transition in the sector, to ensure global energy security in conjunction with building the future energy system. Expanding partnerships and exploring opportunities to increase the production capacity of all renewable energy sources.
This event is an annual international forum to discuss achieving a safe, environmentally responsible and affordable global energy transition. This year, it is attended by a large group of leaders of countries, governments and businesses, representatives of civil society organizations, scientists and official delegations from more than 60 countries. His Excellency Dr. Sultan bin Ahmed Al Jaber stressed in his speech that renewable energy sources are radically changing the energy sector, as they provided nearly 90% of the total new capacity for power generation last year. He referred to Masdar’s plans to increase its portfolio of renewable energy four times over the next seven years from 25,000 megawatts of renewable energy currently to more than 100 gigawatts, explaining that Germany is on a similar path, raising the contribution of renewable energy to 40% of the capacity of renewable energy. generating electricity within 30 years.
Emphasizing the joint vision of the UAE and the Federal Republic of Germany aimed at achieving a smart and just transition in the energy sector, to ensure sustainable economic and social development, His Excellency highlighted the pivotal role of Germany in establishing the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), where it opened the Innovation Center and technology of the agency in Bonn at the time that witnessed the opening of the headquarters of the agency «Irena» in the city of «Masdar» in the United Arab Emirates.
His Excellency said: “The UAE and the Federal Republic of Germany have close strategic relations that extend for more than fifty years, and include energy security, sustainable industrial development, and climate action. And since Germany is the seat of the Secretariat of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, and the host country for three of the Conferences of the Parties, it plays a key role in facing the climate challenge.
He pointed to the importance of cooperation on the scale of the international community, saying: “I call on our German partners, and all our global partners, to work with us to implement economically viable projects for renewable energy in every region around the world.”
In his speech, His Excellency noted the synthesis report of the sixth assessment recently issued by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, stressing the need for the international community to take urgent measures to limit the repercussions of climate change. degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels, and we have a limited opportunity to make a radical correction of the course of action, so we must strengthen our joint efforts and focus on achieving a logical, practical and gradual transition in the energy sector.
His Excellency stressed the need to reduce global emissions by 43%, and that the only way to do so is to adopt an approach that takes advantage of all available solutions, calling on climate action leaders to seek effectively to benefit from all renewable energy sources, and said: «We need to explore all available options. We cannot be satisfied with only one solution such as renewable energy sources, hydrogen, nuclear energy, carbon capture, or the use of oil and gas that are less intensive in emissions… Rather, we need all these solutions together, in addition to the new technologies that will be invented marketing and application.” He also emphasized the important role of hydrogen in sectors whose emissions are difficult to mitigate, such as the steel, cement and aluminum industries, praising the bilateral efforts between the UAE and Germany to increase hydrogen production capacity.

carbon
His Excellency Al-Jaber pointed out the need to use proven technologies in conjunction with the development of hydrogen projects and technologies, and gave an example of carbon capture as a “basic technology for reducing emissions.” He said: “The operational capacity of carbon capture worldwide is currently only 44 million tons annually. This is not enough, and it will be necessary to increase the carbon capture capacity 30 times.” He explained that the main obstacle to this goal is “the high cost of this technology.” emerging carbon such as direct air utilization, mining and osmosis. His Excellency called on the energy sector to constructively cooperate with all industrial sectors in reducing emissions, which “includes all industrial sectors, and requires a solution that includes all these sectors.” He added to the audience: “You may have heard the call I made to the oil and gas sector earlier this month to redouble efforts.” , and the consensus around the goal of achieving climate neutrality by 2050, and achieving net-zero methane emissions by 2030. We need to forge a new relationship between the energy sector and all other sectors, in which the energy sector partners with emission-intensive sectors, technology companies, financial institutions and civil society To find the practical solutions that we need ».

development
He also renewed the need to work on a comprehensive development of the performance of international financing institutions and multilateral development banks to ensure that developing economies are not left behind while the world seeks to expand clean energy solutions, and said: “These institutions were established nearly eighty years ago to stimulate reconstruction processes.” After the (Second World) war, we need to modernize its tasks and develop its operating model to keep pace with the twenty-first century. We also have to expand the scope of concessional financing and provide more of it at an appropriate cost in order to reduce risks and attract financing from the private sector and multiply it. And if we take the right steps today, we can create a low-emissions path to great economic growth.”

encounters
During the visit, His Excellency Dr. Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber will hold a series of bilateral meetings with a number of ministers, senior officials, and representatives of civil society. He will also participate in an event on transition in the energy sector and sustainability with His Excellency Frank-Walter Steinmeier, President of the Federal Republic of Germany. His Excellency is scheduled to hold bilateral meetings with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, Vice Chancellor Dr. Robert Habeck, German Minister of Economic Affairs and Climate Protection, Her Excellency Annalena Berbock, German Foreign Minister, Her Excellency Jennifer Morgan, German Special Envoy for Climate Action, and Joe Kaiser, President The Supervisory Board of Siemens Global Energy, and Dr. Sabine Klucke, Chief Technology Officer, Airbus.
This visit to Berlin is the latest in the global listening and communication tour undertaken by His Excellency Dr. Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, in his capacity as President-Designate of the Conference of the Parties (COP28), which aims to meet and listen to the views of governments, civil society, youth, the private sector, and representatives of international organizations and non-governmental organizations.
