Al-Fayhaa Holds Defending Champions Al-Ittihad to Goalless Draw in Saudi Football Championship

Riyadh (AFP) – Al-Fayhaa curbed the awakening of its guest, Al-Ittihad, the defending champion, when it forced it to a goalless draw on Friday at the opening of the eighth stage of the Saudi Football Championship.

Al-Ittihad was hoping for a third successive victory after its dramatic loss to its guest Al-Hilal 3-4 in the fifth stage, but it failed in that and settled for one point, raising its score to 19 points in first place, which is now threatened with abandonment if Al-Hilal wins over its insulting neighbor later.

Veteran Portuguese international striker Cristiano Ronaldo led his Al-Nasr team to continue its uprising by leading it to victory over its host Al-Taei 2-1.

Al-Nasr scored early through its Brazilian striker Anderson Talisca (32), and Dutchman Virgil Messidian succeeded in equalizing in the 79th minute, but Al-Nasr won a penalty kick that specialist Ronaldo successfully took (87).

Ronaldo strengthened his position at the top of the scorers list with 10 goals.

It is the sixth win in a row for Al-Nassr after it suffered two consecutive losses at the beginning of the season, raising its score to 18 points and rising to third place temporarily, one point behind its neighbor Al-Hilal.

Al-Taawoun took advantage of Al-Ittihad’s stumble and joined them to the top spot by defeating its host Al-Hazm 3-1.

The Gambian Musa Barrow (59), Abdel Fattah Adam (86) and Sattam Hassan Al-Rouqi (90 + 14) scored the goals of Al-Taawoun, and the Portuguese Antonio Jose de Carvalho (72) scored the goal of Al-Hazm.

It is the second win in a row for Al-Taawoun and the sixth this season, raising its score to 19 points on goal difference behind Al-Ittihad, while Al-Hazm suffered its fifth loss against three draws, remaining in last place.

The stage concludes on Saturday with meetings between Abha and Riyadh, Al-Raed with Al-Akhdood, Al-Fateh with Al-Wahda, Al-Ahly with Al-Ettifaq, and Al-Khaleej with Damac.
