Al-Ahly to Face Pyramids in the 20th Edition of the Egyptian Super Championship in Abu Dhabi

The Egyptian Super will return to Abu Dhabi for the sixth time in the history of the competition, which was launched in 2001, and the second in a row, and the 20th edition of the Super Championship will bring together Al-Ahly, the “cup champion” with Pyramids, “the runner-up of the league” at 8:30 pm today at Mohammed Stadium. Bin Zayed.

The Hazaa bin Zayed Stadium hosted the first Egyptian Super match on October 15, 2015, in which Al-Ahly defeated Zamalek with a score (3-2), and on February 10 of 2016, the Mohammed bin Zayed Stadium hosted the Al-Qutaba match, and Zamalek won it (3-1) with kicks. The penalty shootout, after the match ended in a goalless draw.

The Egyptian Super returned to Hazaa bin Zayed Stadium on January 12 of 2018, and Al-Ahly beat Al-Masry with a goal without a response, and Zamalek returned to defeat Al-Ahly on February 20 in the Egyptian Super on UAE soil when it won (4-3) on penalties in the summit match. Which brought them together at Mohammed bin Zayed Stadium after the end of normal time with a goalless draw.

The last time the Egyptian Super was held in the Emirates was last October 28, and Al-Ahly teamed up with Zamalek, during which the first won with two goals without a response.

The current version of the Egyptian Super Championship was scheduled to bring together the two traditional rivals Al-Ahly and Zamalek, but the latter apologized for playing the match, protesting the rejection of the appeal committee’s decision to “install” the penalty for Al-Ahly player, Mahmoud Abdel Moneim (Kahraba), by suspending 12 matches, and postponing the decision to the 14th of this month. This prompted the board of directors of the “White Club”, headed by Mortada Mansour, to announce the decision to apologize.

In recent days, there were hints of Zamalek’s withdrawal, in protest against Kahraba’s punishment, so that the Egyptian Federation decided in the end to choose Pyramids as a replacement for Zamalek, to be the other party in the Super Match, as runners-up for the last edition of the league championship.

It is the first time that Al-Ahly has met Pyramids for the Egyptian Super title, but they met in the last edition of the Egypt Cup final, which took place on the ninth of last April, and Al-Ahly won 2-1 after extending for additional time after the original time ended in a 1/1 positive draw.

Al-Ahly had previously met with Pyramids in 12 matches in the Egyptian League and Cup, so Al-Ahly won on five occasions, and Pyramids defeated four times and tied in three matches.

The two teams enter the confrontation amid different circumstances, as Al-Ahly (12 Super titles) is living its best period in more than two seasons, and was able under the leadership of its Swiss coach, Marcel Koller, so the team won under his leadership the last Super title, won the Egyptian Cup title, and reached the semi-finals of the League Championship. African champions, and is close to regaining the league title, which has been absent from its treasury for two seasons.

On the other hand, Pyramids, who did not win the Super Cup previously, is still suffering from the last meters knot, which deprived it of the Confederation title, against Nahdet Berkane in 2020 by losing the final by penalty kicks, and it was close last season to winning the league title, before losing from Zamalek. Three rounds before the end, he lost the cup title, and he will enter the super match tonight, after bidding farewell to the Confederation against Marumo Gallants of South Africa, with a loss on aggregate 1/2, although he was the first candidate to win the title.
