Al-Ahly Coach Marcel Kohler Responds to Fans’ Demands for Player Selection

“If you want a player to be in the squad or give him the armband, I will sit at home,” was the Swiss coach Marcel Kohler, the Al-Ahly club’s response to the demands and wishes of the red fans.

The recent period witnessed a talk by Al-Ahly fans about their desire for Ali Maaloul to wear the captaincy of the team, in light of the absence of Muhammad Al-Shennawy, who was injured.

Koehler: I’ll sit at home and leave the formation to the fans

And when Koller was asked in the press conference for the last Enppi match, why did Ali Maaloul not wear the armband instead of Mohamed Hani? This was the Swiss coach’s response:

“In Al-Ahly Club, there are strict rules for the captaincy armband, and I know what the public is saying about that, and I will not change this decision in order to compliment anyone.”

“I manage things according to the technical data that I see. I am the technical director and I know what is happening behind the scenes. If you have a desire to give the badge to a specific player, I will sit at home and leave the formation to the fans.”

Koehler is not the exception.. What did Fyler and Musimani do?

Marcel Koehler is not the exception with regard to his response to the questions or demands of the red fans, but he followed the path of his predecessors, whether his compatriot Rene Fyler or South African Pitso Musimani.

Rene Fyler, the former coach of the Red Castle, had the strongest statements regarding the pressures or demands of Al-Ahly fans when he was responsible for leading the team.

Fyler said angrily in one of the press conferences after the victory over Al-Masry in August 2020: “The crowd’s anger at the performance? What is happening is logical. No team achieves a 3-0 victory consistently, otherwise we sit in our homes better.”

He added: “We must accept the team’s performance and results. I repeat, there is no team that achieves victories continuously, and whoever wants that must go to play PlayStation.”

Perhaps Pitso Musimane is one of the most criticized coaches, whether by the fans or even by former players, despite the many titles he won in less than two seasons.

Musimane’s statements have always come in response to the pressure of the fans, who are looking for victory and nothing else.

In one of the previous incidents, Musimani said: “In Al-Ahly, everyone is only asking me to win, and this is something that does not happen in the world. There is no coach who is only required to win. This does not happen in Liverpool or Manchester City.”

In previous statements to the South African newspaper “Prime Sport”, Pitso responded to the criticism of the former players: “Some of the club’s legends criticize me, and they are free to do so and express their opinion. Some criticize me for wanting to coach the team.”
