Al Ahly and the Urawa Red Diamonds reached the semi-finals of the Football Club World Cup in Jeddah (Saudi Arabia) on Friday.
The Egyptians, coached by ex-ÖFB team boss Marcel Koller, beat the local heroes Al Ittihad 3-1 and will now face Copa Libertadores champion Fluminense on Monday. The Japanese defeated the Mexican Club Leon 1-0, and their reward is a duel with Champions League winners Manchester City on Tuesday.
Al Ahly’s clear victory came as something of a surprise, as Al Ittihad had a former world footballer (Karim Benzema), a former world champion (N’Golo Kante) and a former Champions League winner (Fabinho) in the starting line-up.
Benzema missed a penalty in the 45th minute when the score was 1-0 before scoring his club’s consolation goal in the 92nd minute. Shortly before, former goalgetter Anthony Modeste, who now works for Al Ahly, had seen the red card.
