“The energy I got from my mother and my father comes from religion. Because where Ghanaians are, there is a church. As a 6-year-old boy, I was often allowed to read to the entire church community in Amsterdam from one of the bible books, such as Corinthians or Samuel. Every week I memorized a new piece of text. In that church I received the Word: a predilection for the writing and the written. I also learned to speak Ghanaian, which comes in handy when I am in Ghana.
