Akkie Feenstra: New Director of Folkshegeskoalle Schylgerlân and Plans for the Future

The Folkshegeskoalle Schylgerlân has a new director. From October, Akkie Feenstra from Harlingen will take over the duties of Jacqueline Spendel, who will start working at the Fries Museum.

Feenstra is currently still a communications advisor at the municipality of Leeuwarden, a position she previously held on Terschelling.

“I always signal: I’m coming back to the island, no matter what,” says Feenstra. As director, she wants, among other things, that the folk high school is better known among young people and that there is more cooperation with local entrepreneurs.

Most beautiful place in the world

There used to be several folk high schools in the Netherlands, but only one of them is left. The Folkshegeskoalle was founded to stimulate the Frisian language and culture and summer camps, yoga retreats and other courses are now also taking place there.

The folk high school is built around the remains of a German bunker and is located in the woods near Hoorn. “It is the most beautiful slice of the world,” says the future director. “I really like that.”
