Athletics ” Ajla Del Ponte continues to dominate the 100m in Europe. The Tessinoise won at the Stockholm meeting in 11”20. She thus won her second straight in the Diamond League this season after her success in Monaco.
True to form, Del Ponte got off to a modest start before making the difference in the last thirty meters. She beat the Dutch Marije Van Hunenstijn (11”28) and the Ivorian Marie-José Ta Lou (11”32). “We can see that she manages to win at the finish, that’s good. Until the 60m, she was still behind Zahi and Ta Lou, ”explains Laurent Meuwly, her trainer.
With ten races this year and ten (!) Victories, the 24-year-old Ticino is indeed the figurehead of Swiss athletics this season. “It’s time for the series to end. Ajla will return to training for two weeks. It has been very much in demand in recent weeks, ”underlines Meuwly.
For her part, Lea Sprunger had to settle for 6th place in the 400m hurdles in Sweden. The Vaudoise disappointed with a time of 56”40, far from its best time of the season in 55”64. The race was won by her training colleague, the Dutchwoman Femke Bol in 54”68.
Norwegian Karsten Warholm, double world champion in the 400m hurdles, set the second best performance in the history of his discipline in 46”87. Warholm thus improved his own European record (46”92 in Zurich in 2019) and failed just 9 hundredths of the historic world record of the American Kevin Young (46”78 in 1992). ATS
