Ajax purchase of Mislintat is impressive: ‘His market value has already increased enormously’

Frans Hoek is impressed by Diant Ramaj. The ex-goalkeeper coach of the Dutch national team, who is now active at Orange County in the United States, thinks that the market value of the 22-year-old Ajax player has now risen considerably. “And much more can come true,” said Hoek in conversation with Voetbal International.

Ramaj came over from Eintracht Frankfurt this summer for five million euros. The goalkeeper was surprised to see that then coach Maurice Steijn chose Jay Gorter in the opening match against Heracles Almelo (4-1 win) after Gerónimo Rulli’s withdrawal, and not for him. After Gorter’s injury, the German eventually made his debut for Ajax in the away match against FC Utrecht (4-3) and has impressed Hoek ever since.

After eleven games, the counter now stands at four clean sheets for Ramaj. “What he did at Frankfurt, he now shows at Ajax,” Hoek begins. That’s already very good. If you compare that to the costs (five million euros, ed.) and what he is showing at the moment, I think it was a good price.”

“I think his market value has already increased enormously and much more can come from it,” the former goalkeeper continues. “That looks good at the moment. Then it’s about guiding him, training, coaching and how he develops himself within that. He also makes a convinced impression.”

Hoek does not think that Ramaj is exaggerating that. “So I think that’s nice, it also suits Ajax of course. The information I have is that it has been noted in Germany that there is a void after the generation with Manuel Neuer and Marc-André ter Stegen. I understand that there are questions about the succession. Ramaj appears to be one of the possible candidates to fill that void.”

Louis van Gaal’s former right-hand man also reveals that Mislintat obtained information from him about Ramaj this summer. “He asked me what I thought of Ramaj. I had already watched Ramaj for a number of matches at the request of someone else, so I told Mislintat what we have all seen from Ramaj: he is very all-round.”

Ramaj has now been appointed as the first goalkeeper by interim coach John van ‘t Schip. The Ajax coach said this on Wednesday at the press conference prior to the crucial Europa League match with AEK Athens. “He is doing fantastic. There is no reason to take him out now. He is a goalkeeper who radiates a certain calm, does not do crazy things and can play football very well.”
