Verweij: ‘Ajax did not honor an agreement with Berghuis regarding the match against FC Utrecht’

Mike Verweij has come into the breach for Steven Berghuis. In the De Telegraaf podcast Kick-off, the Ajax watcher states that Ajax made agreements with Berghuis about playing against FC Utrecht, but that these were not complied with.
Berghuis was not spared after the Utrecht – Ajax (4-3) match. ESPN analyst Kenneth Perez even said that what Berghuis did looked like sabotage. “As if he did it on purpose,” the Dane said about the attacker’s actions.

Berghuis did not emerge unscathed from the match against AEK Athens (1-1). The left foot suffered a calf injury and also had to miss the match against AZ (1-2 loss).
According to Verweij, it was not the intention that Berghuis would play many minutes against Utrecht. “He was supposed to play a maximum of twenty minutes, but was still used for almost a whole half,” says the journalist.
Berghuis replaced Carlos Forbs after 59 minutes in De Galgenwaard and therefore played a total of almost forty minutes, including injury time. That is almost twice as much as originally intended.
“You cannot play Utrecht at half strength, even if they are seventeenth. He was probably just not completely fit yet,” Verweij continues his argument.
In the reconstruction that De Telegraaf published on Wednesday, it appeared that Maurice Steijn only wanted to continue at Ajax if Berghuis was removed from the selection.
“I was at Feyenoord all day on Wednesday and people who worked closely with him told me that Berghuis also did this at Dick Advocaat,” says Valentijn Driessen in the podcast.
“If things go badly, he will form a group and pit the selection against the trainer,” the football chief says about Ajax’s much-discussed attacker.
