Mike Verweij does not rule out that Ajax will succeed in attracting Jordan Henderson. Club and player are linked and Nathan van Kooperen is now also involved in the transfer. The stakes: a rental period of one and a half years in Amsterdam.
‘I think a lot of fans are thinking: this sounds too good to be true, it’s not going to happen. But I think there is quite a chance that it will happen,” Verweij said in the football podcast The Telegraph. ‘There is now a Dutch agent, Nathan van Kooperen, who is also involved in that deal. They are now working with his club in Saudi Arabia to see if there is a possibility. Ajax wants to rent him for a year and a half if that opportunity arises.’
According to the journalist, Ajax does not have to fear a return of Henderson to the Premier League anytime soon. ‘There is a rule that if an England player earns a lot of money in Saudi Arabia, for example, and returns within a year, he pays 47 percent tax on that money. Outside England this is much more advantageous from a tax perspective. The Bundesliga and Eredivisie are more interesting for Henderson. It gives Ajax hope that it is possible.’
In Saudi Arabia, Henderson reportedly earns fifteen million euros. Verweij explains why a deal may still be financially feasible. ‘He’s 33. Do you think he played football for an apple and an egg at Liverpool? He has more than the Beatles. He will also earn quite a lot at Ajax and perhaps he will become the big earner, but I think Ajax needs him more than Kian Fitz-Jim.’
Salary costs Ajax
Finally, the journalist talks about the ‘fable’ that Sven Mislintat has cut Ajax’s salary costs on his own initiative. ‘In the interview with Maurice Steijn we had the list of players he wanted. People shot at it and said that De Vrij and Isco would not be possible. Isco was without a club at the time and earned one and a half million before that, so that was perfectly possible. Mikautadze also made millions and so does Akpom. The cutting is correct, but that is because a number of key players left.’
