Ajax’s championship party was totally out of place

An emergency ordinance around Leidseplein, terraces closed and an appeal not to come to the city. That seemed to work, because it remained quiet in the center of Amsterdam after it turned out that Ajax took home the national championship title.

But that was different at the Johan Cruijff ArenA. There were thousands of supporters, an estimated 12,000, to cheer on their club. The players rewarded this by ‘briefly’ showing the scale. So it became a party after all. Spontaneously, it was said. And the police did not act to “prevent escalation.”

Thousands of people; on top of each other, without distance or face mask. How do you view that in corona time? Is the middle finger pointing to corona victims and caregivers? Or did this party go well, especially with the thought that it could have been much worse? And how does the decision not to admit an audience fit into this competition? Then the crowd could perhaps have been better controlled.
