Ajax has tried to pick up Donny van de Beek at Manchester United, says Mike Verweij of De Telegraaf. In the football podcast Kick-off, the journalist reveals that Sven Mislintat has asked Van de Beek, who is redundant in England, about a return to Amsterdam. According to Verweij, the 26-year-old midfielder is currently simply too expensive for Ajax. “And I think he was not open to that himself at the time, so that is now definitely off the track.”
Ajax coach Maurice Steijn was happy with Van de Beek’s return. “Through Sven Mislintat, Ajax did make an attempt to bring Van de Beek back from Manchester. In Germany, Maurice Steijn said that he really wanted to have Dutch people, so they asked Van de Beek. That was just incredibly difficult financially and I think he was not open to it at the time, so that is now definitely over.” Van de Beek is still fixed at Old Trafford until mid-2025, but manager Erik ten Hag allows him to leave United. Transfermarkt estimates his current market value at around 13 million euros.
According to Verweij, Van de Beek is faced with a difficult choice. “Donny van de Beek runs into the same problem as Nico Tagliafico. He receives three million euros net at Olympique Lyon and the salary ceiling was lowered slightly at Ajax this summer. Such amounts will no longer occur. That is why the transfer of Tagliafico is so difficult, it does not want to surrender and Ajax does not want to pay 3 million.” Verweij does not yet completely rule out Tagliafico’s return. “It’s not quite over yet.”
Verweij thinks that Ajax supporters can be satisfied with Mislintat’s first purchases. “If you now see how Jakov Médic did against Heracles, it was certainly not disappointing. Branco van den Boomen is of course doing very well. Benjamin Tahirovic is doing quite well, although I think Silvano Vos might be even better. In any case, his teammates are very enthusiastic about Tahirovic.” Mislintat has so far spent 45.3 million euros as technical director of Ajax. The team from Amsterdam was in turn allowed to add 113.4 million euros thanks to outgoing transfers.
