Ajax Women says goodbye to trainer Suzanne Bakker after the season. The expiring contract of the 37-year-old from North Holland will not be extended. Bakker did not see the Amsterdam club’s decision coming.
Bakker started at Ajax in 2018 as trainer of the newly established Ajax Women’s Talent Team. She has been head coach of the Amsterdam women since the summer of 2022, with whom she immediately became national champion in her first season. This season, the coach is in second place with Ajax in the Women’s Eredivisie, behind leader FC Twente.
In the UEFA Women’s Champions League, Ajax is impressive under the leadership of Bakker. After four matches, the Amsterdam women are surprisingly in first place in a ‘group of death’ with Bayern Munich, Paris Saint-Germain and AS Roma.
“To be honest, I didn’t see this coming and I would have liked to see it differently,” Bakker said site from Ajax. “Nevertheless, I can look back on a great period as head coach so far and I am very proud of the results we have achieved. I will of course do everything I can together with the team to end this season successfully.”
Daphne Koster, women’s football manager at Ajax, expresses her gratitude to Bakker on the club website. “We are very grateful to Suzanne for her many years of dedication to Ajax. She has shown her value to the Ajax Women. I hope that her and the team’s hard work will be rewarded by continuing to play in Europe and winning more domestic trophies.”
Ajax is currently staying in Portugal for a training camp. On Saturday, January 20, Ajax will resume the season with a home match against Excelsior. Four days later, Ajax plays away against Paris Saint-Germain in the group stage of the Champions League.
