Ajax Women beats PSV after penalties in second round Eredivisie Cup | NOW

The Ajax football players won the top match in the second round of the Eredivisie Cup against PSV on Friday evening after penalties. The game at De Herdgang ended in 2-2 after regular time.

Ajax took the lead after half an hour thanks to a goal by Marjolijn van den Bighelaar. A minute later, Jeslynn Kuijpers restored the balance on behalf of PSV.

In the final phase of the first half, Stefanie van der Gragt made the 1-2 by heading in a cross from Victoria Pelova. The Amsterdam formation seemed to be heading for victory, but two minutes before the end, Joëlle Smits brought the home team alongside.

Because of this, a penalty shootout had to make the decision. It was won by Ajax 4-2 due to misses by PSV players Julie Biesmans and Ellie Jean.

Set up cup tournament changed this season

The format of the Eredivisie Cup has been changed this season into a ladder competition of five single matches, in which teams are allowed to challenge each other. PSV was the leader in the Women’s Eredivisie in the broken off last season and therefore started the cup tournament on the highest rung of the ladder. Ajax was number two and started on the second sport.

The winning team of the four matches in each round of play is promoted or remains active at the highest level and the losing team is relegated or remains active at the lowest level. The final is between the two teams that play at the highest level in the fifth round.

At the second level FC Twente won 9-2 against Excelsior. Renate Jansen made a hat-trick on behalf of the Enschede formation, which faces Ajax in the third round. PEC Zwolle won 3-0 against ADO Den Haag and will play against PSV in the next round.
