The eighth final of the Portuguese cup tournament has painfully become the final station for Benfica. Ajax’s Champions League opponent got an ear washing of FC Porto: 3-0.
It is unsettled at Benfica, as trainer Jorge Jesus could be hired at Flamengo and the fans would rather lose him than be rich. Add to that the ugly cup elimination against Porto and it should be clear that the atmosphere in Lisbon is not too good. The arch-rival was much too strong in the eighth final of the cup.
After seven minutes, the deficit was almost insurmountable for Benfica, where Jan Vertonghen was in the starting lineup. Goals from Evanilson and Vitinha quickly put Porto ahead 2-0 and that margin was extended to three in the first half, when Evanilson made his second of the evening.
The red shirts from Lisbon were also unable to make it exciting, because a goal by Nicolas Otamendi was disallowed in the second half. As a result, Benfica only has the Portuguese league and the Champions League to play for. In the Premier League is third, four points behind leader Porto.
On February 23 and March 15 of the following year, the Portuguese will take on Ajax in the eighth final of the billion-dollar ball. The first match will be played in the Estádio Da Luz, after which the return will be played in the Johan Cruijff Arena.
