The technical staff of Ajax sees Dimitris Giannoulis as a suitable candidate to strengthen the left back position, reports the Greek Sport24. The 28-year-old Greek from Norwich City has an expiring contract in England and is therefore considered a cheap option. According to Transfermarkt, Giannoulis represents a transfer value of ‘only’ three million euros.
Ajax is said to have already done ‘preparatory work’ to sign the Greek back, although no final decision has been made yet, it sounds. According to Sport24, trainer John van ‘t Schip has personally asked for Giannoulis and that is also the left back he wants to add to his selection this week.
The two know each other from Van ‘t Schip’s period with the Greece national team, where he held sway between 2019 and 2021. Ajax has reportedly already been in contact with Giannoulis and has been told by him that he would like a transfer to Amsterdam. There has also already been contact with Norwich.
Initially, the Canaries did not want to let the left back go in view of the goal of promotion to the Premier League. Norwich are currently in ninth place in the Championship, meaning direct promotion no longer seems realistic. However, the play-offs for the last ticket to the Premier League are not impossible. Numbers three to six will compete for this at the end of the season.
Norwich would no longer be reluctant to see Giannoulis leave this month, not least because that is the only opportunity left to earn something from the Greek. Giannoulis has reportedly already decided that he will not extend his expiring contract because he is ready for the next step in his career.
Norwich reportedly want to receive five million euros for Giannoulis, but there is ‘room for negotiation’, it sounds. If Ajax indeed decides to go for the Greek back, the financial aspect of the transfer will not be an obstacle, Sport24 writes. Ajax already has three left backs under contract, including Borna Sosa, Ar’jany Martha and Anass Salah-Eddine.
Jorrel Hato could also play there, although Van ‘t Schip prefers to keep him in the center of the defense. Gastón Ávila was initially brought in as a left back, but does not see himself as a back and prefers to play in the center. The Argentinian was recently seriously injured in training and will normally not play again this season.
