Despite a mediocre match, Ajax took the three points from Qarabag FK: 0-3. The home team played for a long time with ten men due to a red card for Júlio Romão and finished with nine due to a red card for Elvin Cafarquliyev.
After the 4-0 win over Besiktas and the 1-1 at Slavia Prague, Ajax now has seven points from three games in the Europa League.

At Ajax, Italian Daniele Rugani, who came over from Juventus at the end of August, was in the starting line-up for the first time. Wout Weghorst also got a place in the starting line-up after his strong, influential substitute appearances (three goals) in his last two Premier League matches.
Weghorst immediately showed his calling card with a foul on Marko Jankovic within a few seconds. The striker did not set the tone, because Ajax started weakly. Qarabag was awake and found the net within two minutes.
After weak defending from Ajax, Cafarquliyev crossed and Leandro Andrade shot in at the near post. However, the goal was disallowed due to offside for Cafarquliyev.
Ajax escaped an early deficit and received help from the home team after fifteen minutes. Júlio Romão held the broken through Mika Godts and was sent off the field by Scottish referee Nick Walsh.
Taylor opens the scoring
Remarkably, nothing changed in the game at eleven against ten. Qarabag remained the parent and especially the build-up from the back was nothing to write home about at Ajax. It was much too slow through Rugani and Josip Sutalo.

Yet Ajax took the lead. Kenneth Taylor had an important ball victory, the ball went to Weghorst via Godts and Weghorst’s effort was promoted to a goal by Taylor.
After the break there was another chance for Weghorst, but the striker produced a weak shot and Christian Rasmussen’s rebound was also below average. The ten team from Azerbaijan also remained dangerous in the second half.
After another mistake in the Ajax build-up, Andrade got a chance, but Sutalo barely made the save. The equalizer for the champions of Azerbaijan did not materialize and fifteen minutes before the end the decision was made at the other end.
Penalty Weghorst
After a firm shoulder push from Kevin Medina on Christian Rasmussen, Ajax was awarded an easily awarded penalty and Weghorst stood behind the ball. De Tukker took advantage of the opportunity and, despite a difficult performance, was able to look back on a good match with a goal and an assist.
Weghorst was replaced just before the end by 16-year-old Belgian Jorthy Mokio. Brian Brobbey remained on the bench.
On instructions from Godts, substitute Chuba Akpom made it 0-3 after a nice attack and Qarabag even ended the game with nine men after a second yellow card for Cafarquliyev, after a hard tackle on substitute Anton Gaaei.
In this way, Ajax still achieved a big victory in a mediocre match. The next match is on November 7 against Maccabi Tel Aviv in Amsterdam.
