With a victory over AZ, Ajax’s football players have prevented competitor FC Twente from being able to call themselves champions of the Eredivisie. Coach Suzanne Bakker’s team won 3-0 at De Toekomst.

The match between Ajax and AZ was still 0-0 in the 8th minute last Saturday when AZ goalkeeper Femke Liefting collided with Chasity Grant of Ajax on the way out. After the collision, the goalkeeper remained motionless. She was carried off the field on a stretcher and taken to hospital, where doctors diagnosed a concussion. The players of both teams quickly decided not to continue playing the match.

When the match resumed on Thursday, Romée Leuchter quickly scored the opening goal. She shot a free kick into the left of the goal past Netty Booms who replaced AZ goalkeeper Liefting. In the second half Leuchter doubled the lead. Her replacement Danique Tolhoek made it 3-0 in the last fifteen minutes.

FC Twente has 53 points with two games left to play. Defending champion Ajax has 48 points after the victory.
