1 augustus 2022 – Burak Yilmaz does not seem to be there this Saturday when Fortuna Sittard opens the season against Ajax. The striker is not yet fit enough and does not expect to be able to play yet. The coming days will show whether this is actually the case.
“I’m not ready yet if I’m honest,” Yilmaz told Monday after Fortuna’s training in conversation with ESPN. “I have trained 3 or 4 times with the team. There are still a few days to go, but I want to appear fit for the match. In the exhibition game I only came on the field out of respect for the supporters who had traveled.”
The 37-year-old Turk played at Galatasaray, Besiktas and Lille OSC, among others. The 77-time international would therefore like to pass on his knowledge of recent years to his teammates. “I have played more matches and more experience than my teammates. I am certainly willing to help them if they want my help. I can already see that they are eager to learn.”
Yilmaz made his first minutes on behalf of Fortuna last weekend in the practice match against VVV-Venlo. Fortuna won 6-2 against the provincial colleague, but the striker did not score. So it doesn’t seem to happen against Ajax this Saturday either. Kick-off is on Saturday afternoon at 4.30 pm in the Fortuna Sittard Stadium.
