Gastón Ávila has already played his last match for Ajax, Voetbal International said on Friday. According to the weekly magazine, the defender will not be eligible for playing minutes in the club’s main squad in the second half of the season and he is dissatisfied with his situation. Ávila wants to leave Ajax during the winter transfer market, barely six months after his arrival from Royal Antwerp FC.
Director of football affairs Marc Overmars concluded a deal with Ajax on behalf of Royal Antwerp FC for a transfer fee of 12.5 million euros, excluding 1.9 million euros in bonuses. A large amount for the Belgians, who had received 4.4 million euros from Boca Juniors a year earlier. However, the 22-year-old Argentinian fell through the lower limit in the Ajax outfit, just like many other summer purchases. He lost his last bit of credit in the now famous cup match with USV Hercules (3-2 defeat).
Ávila played a total of 489 minutes for Ajax, which means that he cost the club no less than 25,562 euros per minute of play. According to the FootballTransfers algorithm, the Argentinian’s Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) is currently 15.7 million euros and that is good news for Ajax, as a winter transfer is somewhat complex in his case. Avila also played for Royal Antwerp this season and according to FIFA rules, players are allowed to play for a maximum of two clubs between July 1 and June 30.

Within Europe, Ávila could only return to Antwerp or transfer to a European competition that is not parallel to the Belgian or Dutch competition or transfer to a competition outside Europe, such as the Middle East, North America or South America. Given its share in Royal Antwerp’s national title and its status as a member of the Argentina Olympic team, Ajax believes it can still recover a significant part of the transfer fee.
