John van ‘t Schip is logically very disappointed in the performance of his team when visiting Aston Villa. Ajax lost without a chance at Villa Park (4-0) and the coach of the Amsterdam team saw the 2-0 and the red card for Sivert Mannsverk as turning points in the Conference League match.

The team from Amsterdam traveled to Birmingham with hope after the 0-0 in the first match against Aston Villa, but were not involved at all. The English won 4-0 thanks to goals from Ollie Watkins, Leon Bailey, Jhon Duran and Moussa Diaby.

Ajax midfielder Sivert Mannsverk, who played dramatically, received his second yellow card and therefore red in the 66th minute. To make matters worse, Ajax lost three defenders to injuries: Ahmetcan Kaplan, Josip Sutalo and Devyne Rensch.

“The 2-0 score and the red card on top of it naturally made it very difficult to tie the match,” Van ‘t Schip concluded afterwards in front of the ESPN camera. “We also had injuries to Kaplan and Sutalo. It didn’t get any easier.”

“Everything that could go wrong, ultimately went wrong. In these types of matches, of course, a lot has to go wrong.” Van ‘t Schip points to, among other things, a missed chance by Brian Brobbey just before half time and a possible red card for Watkins, who received a yellow card after a foul on Diant Ramaj.

The selector saw a lot go wrong with Aston Villa’s opening goal. “Watkins was completely free at 1-0, we all saw that. We defend in the zone and so you have to attack the ball, but that didn’t happen. Everyone could see that he could head in freely.”

“Did I have the idea that I had to replace Mannsverk earlier? Well, no, because it all happened in five minutes,” Van ‘t Schip refers to the accumulation of errors by the midfielder. “We indeed already had a substitution ready, but in the end he got red and we had to change that substitution.”
