Ajax Coach Maurice Steijn Reflects on 0-4 Classic Loss Against Feyenoord and Looks Ahead to RKC Match: Exclusive Interview

Ajax lost 0-4 in the Classic against Feyenoord in two days. Ajax coach Maurice Steijn is ashamed, but also looks ahead.

Steijn tried to reverse the 0-3 deficit in the remainder of the Classic on Wednesday with an attacking substitution. He brought forward Chuba Akpom for defender Anass Salah-Eddine.

“We wanted to force something in the beginning. But you immediately concede a goal. Then it is 0-4 and you know that the match has definitely been played. It was of course already a very difficult task,” said Steijn at ESPN.

“I’m ashamed,” he said later at the press conference. “We wanted to play football where we could. But we didn’t get much time for that and then you try with long balls. But that was not enough today.”

Ajax was restless for the remainder of the match. On Sunday, technical director Sven Mislintat was fired after the first part of the Classic. Just before the sequel on Wednesday, it was announced that Pier Eringa will step down as chairman of the supervisory board.

“I’m not going to say anything about everything that happened,” Steijn said. “I am happy that we can now close this and we will focus on RKC. We have to get the team back together. We have to continue and we will continue.”

‘Hold on to good moments against Olympique’

On Saturday, Ajax will visit RKC, which is in thirteenth place above Ajax (fourteenth). Steijn has to work to get his team running. “I don’t run away from that. Apart from all the problems, we are too low and we have to work with those players. I am the first to know that things have to be better, and everyone knows that.”

“We have to hold on to parts and the good moments against Olympique Marseille (3-3, ed.) and until the 2-0 against Feyenoord,” the trainer continued. “You have to cling to that at the moment. We have good players and the group is only now coming together well. In training it looks really good at times. You don’t see that in the match yet, but you have to.” come very quickly. That’s clear.”
