UTRECHT – The most successful Dutch football club Ajax Amsterdam suffered one of the most shameful defeats in history in an already unsuccessful season.
The four-time Champions League winner was sensationally eliminated today in the 2nd round of the domestic cup after a 2-3 defeat against USV Hercules from the fourth top competition. Ajax lost to an amateur club for the first time ever.
The big favorite was losing 0:2 in Utrecht until the 82nd minute. He then managed to equalise, but a shock winner was scored in the third minute by set-up Mats Grotenbreg to send the outsider into the third round.
“This shouldn’t have happened,” Ajax assistant coach Michael Valkanis said. Head coach John van ‘t Schip was not personally present at the embarrassment because he was marrying his son in Australia.
“We are going through a very difficult season. But we have to keep trying and get on the right track,” dodal Valkanis.
Thirty-six-time league champions Ajax experienced a horror start to the season, not winning ten matches in a row and moving in the relegation zone. He is currently fifth, but with a huge loss of 23 points to the leader Eindhoven.
