Ajax eliminated Panathinaikos of Greece in a long penalty shootout to advance to the UEFA Europa League Play-offs that give them a ticket to the Group Stage.
The surprising thing is that the Dutch side made it past the Third Qualifying Round after 34 penalties were taken at the Amsterdam Arena.
Ajax won the first leg 1-0 and Panathinaikos won the return leg by the same score, so the match went into extra time and penalties.
Panathinaikos missed its last two attempts as Ajax advanced to the next round with an unusual score of 13-12.
The Amsterdam team had their hero in Remko Pasveer, a 40-year-old goalkeeper who saved five penalties and contributed one goal.
Ajax will face Polish side Jagiellonia Bialystok in the play-offs, with the winner of the tie qualifying for the 2024-25 Europa League Group Stage.
